The Toad King used to be the supreme, tyrannical ruler of the land. Zacharie and Sugar were his servants, and he abused and hurt them when they didn’t perform their tasks perfectly—Zacharie wears a mask because the Toad King mutilated his face
Eventually Zach had enough, and rebelled against the King. The first time, Zacharie tried to poison his drink, but the King was massive and the poison wasn’t strong enough; he punished his servant by ripping off his wings. The second time, Zach hired an assassin, but the assassin was cowardly and turned tail as soon as he saw the Toad King. The King punished Zacharie by ripping off Sugar’s wings next.
The third time, Zacharie decided to battle the King directly. He managed to slay him, but in doing so, he caused a massive explosion that changed the very fabric of their universe, and destroyed most of their world, leaving only the places the Zones were built on.
